Staying Cool During the Hot Summer Months
We sure did enjoy and extended spring this year, but here in Las Vegas, we are full on into the summer heat. I don’t know about you, but I find that when the heat rises, we see a slow down in our own riding. The motivation to get out on the bike just melts away like ice cream melting in the hot desert sun.
Heat effects people in different ways, and some people have higher heat tolerances than others. I’m not very heat tolerant. When the temperatures start getting in to the high 80s, low 90s, I get more sluggish, waterlog myself with too much water and, in general, start feeling really miserable. No fun. At all. Just take me home.
This year, I was determined to make myself more comfortable for summertime riding. I had heard about a cooling vest for athletes that seems to work well keeping body temperatures low. To some, it might seem a little pricey, but if it worked the value would far outweigh the price.
The AcrticHeat cooling vest utilizes a non-toxic hydrating gel that uses evaporative cooling to keep core body temperatures cooler. What is even better is that after being hydrated, this gel vest can be refrigerated or frozen to offer even longer cooling times. Ideally, this vest is worn directly against the skin. I wear it with a long sleeve, UV protected, technical overshirt.
I’ve used this vest with just the gels hydrated, partially hydrated and frozen and then fully hydrated and frozen. All these variations are effective at keeping your body temperature cooler, but the frozen overnight is the best and longest lasting for more extreme heat like we’ve been experiencing. It’s akin to having cold Otter Pops against your skin!
This vest, combined with earlier start times really takes away any hesitation I have for riding this summer. I would totally recommend giving it a go if you are looking for good ways to stay cool while exercising this summer.
